2002- Ethiopia
Residents of Ethiopia face a famine threat to over 15 million residents due to a drought. More than 10% of the government's revenue is spent on repaying its national debt. Prime minister, Addis Ababa had called on neighboring and international allies, and over 11 million dollars in urgent aid.
2004- Sudan
Hundreds of youth are beginning to starve to death. Even with immediate international assistance, over 300,000 people would starve because they would not be able to keep their food down. People are forced to flee and walk aimlessly through deserts, for their villages have been burned down by Arab military. The received international response is not nearly enough.
2005- Niger
3.6 million children and adults face starvation caused by extreme shortage of food. The current drought and the loss of last year's crops due to locusts. Even with the occasional rainfall, it brings no relief, but only disease such as malaria. Every day, more than 1/3 of its population faces hunger, and families struggle to provide for their shrinking children.
2006- Kenya
3.5 million people face the threat of death by starvation due to the country's past five years of drought. Officials claim this is the worst famine Kenya's had in four decades. In an attempt to improve the situation, the United Kingdom donated 26 million dollars in assistance.
2006- Zimbabwe
A shortage of wheat in Zimbabwe is causing the price of bread to grow. In the duration of 7 days, the cost of bread rose 30%. This event advanced its inflation rate to 600%. President Mugabe places blame on the recent drought. The shortage has shut down the top millers, increased food shortages, unemployment, and placed 4.3 million people in the need of food aid.
2008- Zimbabwe
The wave of a severe food shortage has caused extreme health problems in children. Severe malnutrition has risen 66% in just one year, causing children to waste away until their death. 6 million people are in the situation of life or death starvation, and need food now. Impure water infested with disease is also a major contributor. Political distress and economic disaster are basic side effects.
2009- Kenya
Kenya's prolonged drought of 3 years has caused extreme malnutrition in children, and the need of immediate food aid to 3.8 million people. The United Nations has asked for 230 million dollars in order to salvage the situation, and neighboring regions to aid.
2010- Niger
Niger endures its worst drought since 1984, and over 7 million people are in critical condition and in need of food. 2.5 million children are withering away, and without proper ways to store food such as refrigeration, farmers have no choice but to sell their meat with little or no profit.
2010- Sahel
The Sahel is the area between the Sahara Desert and the Sudanian Savannas. A drought has placed over 114,000 children into a severe state of malnutrition, and left 10 million Africans battling starvation. People have gone numerous days without eating. The UN has stated that the people of this situation are in critical condition and desperate for help. Millions have been donated.
2011- Somalia
10 million Somalians are struggling through the worst drought they've had in 50 years. Over 166,000 Somalians and their children have left in order to find refuge in the surrounding countries. Children are undernourished, causing toddlers that are 3 or 4 years old to look 1 year old. UN has officially confirmed the famine.
